Author and Latina feminst mental health activist Dior Vargas wondered: How do people of color experience mental illness?
To find answers Ms. Vargas interviewed people of color across the country. She asked people living with a mental health diagnosis about their ease of access (or lack thereof) to mental health services and receiving culturally competent care. Individuals responded with compelling stories full of truth and insight. They report on what helps them survive, how to navigate family and cultural beliefs about mental illness, and share their triumphs and challenges.
Written in English and Spanish, The Color of My Mind focuses exclusively on people of color who share their stories of living with mental illness while living in a variety of cultural and linguistic communities. They are a diverse group: queer and straight, Latinx, indigineous, Black, Asian-American and mixed race, and speak multiple languges. They work in a wide range of fields from artist to business professionals.
